BEIJING (Reuters) - Eight Chinese who used high-tech communications equipment, including mobile phones and wireless earpieces, to help their children cheat at university entrance exams have been jailed on state secret charges, local media said.  The eight, from the wealthy eastern province of Zhejiang, got together in 2007 to plot how to help their children as "they knew their achievements were not ideal," the official Legal Daily said.

Believe me, I've known plenty of parents like that, and they weren't Chinese.

From the New York Post:   New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller equated the Gray Lady to a PBS pledge drive, claiming readers have offered to donate money to keep the Times alive...The bombastic broadsheet editor went on to equate the keep-the-Times-alive movement to the cause of starving African refugees, saying, "Saving the New York Times now ranks with saving Darfur as a high-minded cause."

Uh, yeah.  Today The Times, tomorrow the world.

From the New York Post:  THE apple fell far from the tree with John Augustin Washington V. The 46-year-old Washington, a direct descendant of George Washington, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for smashing an English banker over the head with a vodka bottle during a dispute over a woman at Les Caves du Roy nightclub in St. Tropez in July 2006.

I wonder if he lied at his trial.

News of brilliant criminals, from the AP:   SAN MARCOS, Calif. (AP) -- A couple who went on national television to brag about making $100,000 shoplifting and selling their loot on eBay is under investigation by federal agents.  Matthew and Laura Eaton of San Marcos appeared on the ''Dr. Phil'' show last fall to share their story, aided by a video of their three small children accompanying them on a three-day shoplifting binge.

And to think, they could have gone legit, worked for AIG, and taken more.
